What I did for my practicum?
For my practicum, I took the class ENES210. This class is called Entrepreneurial Opportunity Analysis and Decision Making in 21st Century Technology Ventures. In this class, each student comes up with an idea for a startup company and spends the semester planning to create this company. The class assignments are to research competing companies or plan out a marketing plan.
How did I find my practicum?
I found out about this class from the classes that Kelly listed in her presentation about practicum last semester. My original plan was to do an internship for my practicum but with the pandemic everything was unsure. I did an internship summer 2020 but I was not sure I was going to be able to get enough hours to count it. My two friends, Megan and Julia, decided to take this class so I decided to take it with them so I had friends to take it with. Some advice I could give to students doing their practicum would be to listen to the presentation that Kelly gives during class in the fall semester. I found out about my practicum during this presentation and there were plenty of other options she talked about as well.
What did I learn from my practicum?
I learned so much from my practicum. As a Government and Politics/Criminology and Criminal Justice major, I am not very experienced when it comes to creating a business. I have learned all I could ever want to know about starting a business. I learned how to be an entrepreneur. For example, I know what is necessary in order to find co-founders, investors, and partners. I would have never known any of this information.
How have I grown as a person and a student?
I have learned so many new skills that I would have never learned. I have grown because I have expanded my horizons into subject areas that I was extremely unfamiliar with. I stepped out of my comfort zone and definitely grew as a person throughout the process. My majors are very similar to each other so my classes overlap with each other, but with this class I learned a completely new subject. The evidence I chose was this sample income sheet. For class last week we had to create this and it was very difficult to figure out. On an income sheet, you have to find your revenues and expenses. The professor said that the profit was to be 0 so that meant the revenue and expenses had to be even. Eventually, it clicked and I was so proud of myself when I figured out how to do it!
